How Much Is a CGM?

Whether your goal is weight loss, improving your metabolic health and quality of life, enhancing athletic performance, or preventing and reversing conditions like prediabetes, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) can help you track your blood sugar levels in real time.

But how much does a CGM cost? Prices of these sensors can vary significantly based on the brand, sensor type, insurance coverage, and copays, as well as whether you're buying sensors individually, over the counter, or through a subscription program.

That's why you should pick one through a program that gives you real value (like Nutrisense, where you can work 1:1 with a personal dietitian or nutritionist to truly understand and make the most of the insights from your CGM data). Programs like this vary in price and typically include a shipment of a few CGMs every month through the duration of your subscription, depending on your sensor and plan choice.

Some companies may require a yearly subscription fee, even if you only intend to use a CGM for one month. So, you'll want to compare the cost of CGMs not just based on whether a long-term subscription or a shorter, no-commitment plan is better for you and your health goals. No matter what you choose, navigating the data you see from your CGM and making the most of your device can initially seem overwhelming. That's why it's essential to have guidance and support from an expert throughout your journey.

Prescription for a CGM Device

Do you need a prescription for a CGM device? It depends on the sensor you're buying. More accurate sensors, like the Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7, the FreeStyle Libre, Libre 14-day CGM, FreeStyle Libre 2, or FreeStyle Libre 3, are still prescription-only. You can access these through subscription CGM programs and companion apps.

Non-prescription CGM

Since the FDA has approved various over-the-counter CGMs, they are now available in the United States through non-prescription (over-the-counter) options like Stelo by Dexcom and Abbott's Lingo.

CGM without a doctor

Over-the-counter (OTC) CGMs do not require a doctor’s prescription. Some sensors, such as the G7 and Libre 3, still require a prescription,, but you can typically get a CGM prescription online for those as well, especially when you sign up for a CGM subscription program.

How Do You Get a CGM for Free?

Unfortunately, there are no companies that provide CGMs or blood glucose monitors for free.

Some CGMs may be available through insurance coverage or other healthcare companies for diabetes care or management. So, if you have a condition like type 1 or type 2 diabetes, your doctor may prescribe it as a more convenient option for keeping track of your levels than the traditional blood glucose meter. However, this is only when deemed medically necessary for those who meet certain criteria.

For most people, it's easiest and most cost-effective to buy a CGM device over the counter or through a subscription service.

So, how much does a CGM cost without insurance coverage? The cheapest continuous glucose monitors available may vary by provider and program length. Over-the-counter sensors start at $89/month and can be the lowest cost CGMs (or around $50 per device), but usually have limited or no companion app or support.

Glucose sensor prices depend on your CGM provider. If you purchase them as part of a holistic health program that includes guidance and support for example,, they vary from $225 to $299 per month, depending on the subscription length. Plus, you need a patch to keep the sensor in place, so if it doesn’t come with the device, factor that in. Luckily, blood sugar monitor patch costs are relatively low (the Nutrisense program provides complimentary patches for each device).

Unfortunately, many insurance providers do not currently cover CGMs, which means that you'll need to pay for the CGM sensor costs out of pocket. For more information on the price of a CGM without insurance or for a CGM cost comparison, visit our cost page.

Why Are Continuous Glucose Monitors So Expensive?

Glucose meter prices and CGM costs can vary depending on various factors. Since most CGMs require a prescription and are not covered by insurance providers, many people will need to pay full price for the sensors out of pocket.

If you qualify for a prescription and are wondering how much a CGM with insurance costs, consult your healthcare professional and insurance provider for more information.Continuous blood glucose monitor prices can also vary if you join a wellness program like Nutrisense. The least expensive CGM can be found through a long-term commitment to a program.
